Pfänder is a mountain in the state of Vorarlberg, Austria, rising above the town of Bregenz on the eastern shore of Lake Constance. It is a well-known regional viewpoint and recreational area.
The mountain is reached by the Pfänderbahn cable car from Bregenz, and the summit zone features walking paths, panoramic platforms and an alpine wildlife area with native species displays. The viewpoint is popular for views over Lake Constance and the surrounding Alpine and pre-Alpine ranges.
Historically the mountain has been used for leisure and tourism since the 19th century as Bregenz developed into a lakeside town with visitor facilities. It lies immediately above Bregenz and forms a dominant natural backdrop to the town and lakeshore.

How to Get to Pfänder #
Pfänder is reached from the lakeside city of Bregenz. In Bregenz take the Pfänderbahn cable car from the harbour/base station near the train station up to the summit (the base is a short walk from Bregenz’s station and waterfront). By car, follow the A14 motorway to Bregenz and then local roads to the Pfänder parking areas; driving from central Bregenz to the cable‑car area takes only a few minutes.
Tips for Visiting Pfänder #
- Take the Pfänderbahn cable car from Bregenz's lakefront (near the harbor) for the quickest access to the summit and panoramic viewing platforms; arriving at the valley station before the first mid-morning departures helps you beat day‑trip crowds.
- If you want quieter views, aim for early morning or late afternoon - cruise-ship and coach groups tend to arrive between late morning and early afternoon; sunset offers particularly good light for photographing Lake Constance and the Alpine chain.
- Skip the summit plaza rush by following one of the short marked walking trails off the main viewing area - even brief loops lead to quieter vantage points and small alpine meadows that many day-trippers miss.
