Peyrepertuse is a ruined medieval fortress in the Aude department of southern France, built on a high limestone ridge in the Corbières. It dates back to the medieval period and is one of a series of frontier strongholds in the region.
The ruin consists of multiple fortified enclosures stacked along the ridge, connected by stairways and defensive walls, and is notable for its dramatic position and extensive exterior walls. Visitors traverse rocky paths and ramps to reach the upper sections and viewpoints.
The castle originated in the medieval period and was expanded in successive phases during the 12th and 13th centuries as regional control consolidated. It fell into disuse and ruin after the medieval period and was later preserved as a historic monument.

The nearest sizable towns providing services are in the Languedoc/Roussillon area-expect rural driving on winding mountain roads to reach the site.
