Petite France, Strasbourg

Petite France is a historic quarter on the Grande Île in central Strasbourg, France, famous for its concentration of half-timbered houses, canals and medieval streets. It is one of the city’s best-known and best-preserved historic districts.

The area comprises narrow cobbled streets, rows of timber-framed houses from the 16th and 17th centuries, canals of the Ill River and preserved mill and tanner architecture that speak to the district’s former crafts. Key viewpoints include the Ponts Couverts and riverside walkways that frame the quarter’s facades.

Originally a working quarter for tanners, millers and fishermen, the neighbourhood developed through the late medieval and early modern periods and retains much of its historic layout and building stock. Conservation and restoration over the 19th and 20th centuries helped preserve its character.

Located on the western side of Strasbourg’s Grande Île in the Grand Est region, Petite France sits amid the city centre’s canal network and is within walking distance of Strasbourg Cathedral and other central landmarks.
