Peștera cu Oase

Peștera cu Oase is a limestone cave in Caraș-Severin County in southwestern Romania known for Paleolithic human fossils discovered in the early 21st century. The site produced some of the oldest modern human remains found in Europe, dated to about 40,000 years ago.

The cave yields fragmentary human skull and jaw elements that are the principal scientific attraction; these fossils are important for research rather than for typical tourist viewing. The site itself is small and archaeological in character rather than a developed visitor destination.

Excavations in the early 2000s recovered multiple fragmentary human bones, commonly referenced under the label Oase 1 and associated specimens. Analysis of the remains has focused on dating and on morphological comparisons that indicate mixed modern human and Neanderthal traits.

The cave sits in a karst area of southwestern Romania in Caraș-Severin County. It is a geological and archaeological feature rather than a major public site; precise access and any public displays of the fossils are managed by Romanian research institutions and museums.
