Pergusa Lake (Lago di Pergusa) is a natural lake near Enna in central Sicily, notable as one of the island’s inland freshwater basins and for its surrounding woodland and wildlife. The lake sits in a relatively isolated basin and is an important stopover for migratory birds.
A motor racing circuit encircles much of the lake and is used for automotive events, giving the site a dual character of natural reserve and sporting venue. Walking and birdwatching around the shore are common activities when events are not taking place.
The lake lies close to the city of Enna in the central highlands of Sicily and is accessible from regional roads.

How to Get to Pergusa Lake #
Lake Pergusa (Lago di Pergusa) lies just outside the town of Enna in central Sicily. By car take the A19 motorway and then the SS117bis toward Enna; the lake is only a few kilometres from Enna’s center (approximately a 10-15 minute drive, ~5-8 km). From Catania the drive is roughly 90-100 km via the A19 (about 1-1.5 hours).
Enna has a railway station on the Catania-Palermo line; from Enna station a short local bus or taxi ride (around 10 minutes) will get you to the lake and the Autodromo di Pergusa.
Tips for Visiting Pergusa Lake #
- Plan a visit in the early morning (or at dawn) during spring or autumn to catch passing and resident waterfowl around Lago di Pergusa when the reserve is at its quietest and birdlife is most active.
- Check the calendar for events at the Autodromo di Pergusa before you go - the race circuit encircles the lake and motorsport events can bring crowds and temporary restrictions to lakeside paths and parking.
- Use the designated nature trails around the reserve rather than cutting across private land; walking the official paths gives the best chance to see different habitats around the lake while minimizing disturbance to protected areas.
