Penyagolosa

Penyagolosa is a limestone massif in the province of Castellón in Spain, crowned by a peak at about 1,813 metres and regarded as a symbolic high point of the Valencian interior. It is a conspicuous, steep-sided mountain used for hiking and religious pilgrimage.

Trails of varying length and difficulty reach the summit and the slopes contain rural villages and pastoral landscapes; many routes are used seasonally for day hikes and multi-day treks. The summit and nearby viewpoints afford wide vistas across the surrounding interior and other nearby ranges.

Historically the mountain has been a focus for local religious devotion, with a small hermitage and pilgrimage traditions traced back centuries; the massif has also been managed for grazing and forest uses. In recent decades it has been included within local protected-area designations to conserve its landscapes and biodiversity.

Geographically Penyagolosa sits inland from the Mediterranean coast in northeastern Spain, within the uplands of Castellón province and forming part of the eastern foothills of Spain’s interior ranges.
