Pellestrina

Pellestrina is a narrow barrier island in the Venetian Lagoon off the coast of Veneto, Italy, forming a natural separation between lagoon waters and the open Adriatic Sea. The island is characterized by low dunes, fishing villages, and seaside fronts on the lagoon and the seaward side.

The island’s built-up centres are a sequence of small villages and harbours rather than one large town, with fishing and local maritime activities as longstanding local economies. Long sandy beaches and lagoon-front promenades are typical features along the island’s length.

Historically Pellestrina developed as a fishing and salt-working community that provided shelter and access for lagoon traffic; infrastructure such as sea walls and ferry links have shaped its modern layout. Today it functions largely as a residential and seasonal destination for locals and visitors.

Pellestrina lies southwest of central Venice within the Venetian lagoon, separated from the Lido by inlets and connected to the mainland by ferry services to Chioggia and to Venice.
