Pelion
Mountain Mountainous Greek peninsula with traditional villages and trails
A Thessaly peninsula where mountain villages drop to Aegean and Pagasetic Gulf beaches, Pelion combines chestnut woods, stone-built settlements like Portaria, and coastal tavernas. Hikers and swimmers use its network of footpaths and seaside coves.
Pelion is a mountainous peninsula in Thessaly, central Greece, known for densely forested slopes, traditional stone villages and a coastline that alternates between sandy beaches and rocky coves. It has a long cultural history and strong local traditions in architecture and cuisine.
Key attractions include hilltop villages such as Portaria, Makrinitsa and Milies with timber-and-stone houses, panoramic views over the Pagasetic Gulf and a network of mule tracks and walking trails spanning the mountain ridge. The area offers both summer seaside activities and a small ski area for winter recreation.
Mythically associated with the centaurs and the labors of ancient Greek heroes, Pelion’s human landscape developed through pastoralism, forestry and maritime connections; the 19th and 20th centuries saw growth in tourism while many villages retain traditional crafts. Railway heritage survives in places such as the historic Volos-Milies narrow-gauge line.
Pelion sits immediately inland from the Pagasetic Gulf with the city of Volos at its western foot, providing the main access point by road and rail; the peninsula extends into the Aegean and is readily reached from Volos and regional transport links.
- Nearest city: Volos at the foot of Pelion is the nearest major city and the main transport hub for visitors, with road links and regional ferries to the Sporades islands.
- Landscape contrasts: Pelion's coastal side features sandy beaches while inland slopes are heavily forested with beech, oak and chestnut, offering contrasting seaside and mountain activities in summer and winter.
What to See #
- Portaria and Makrinitsa: Portaria and Makrinitsa are classic hill villages on the western slopes above Volos, noted for stone-built houses and panoramic views over the Pagasetic Gulf.
- Milies and Zagora: Milies and Zagora are traditional mountain villages with historic churches, old railway connections and access points for long-distance walking trails across Pelion.
- Pelion Ski Centre: The Pelion Ski Centre near Chania village provides winter sport facilities on the mountain ridge and is the principal local ski area.
How to Get to Pelion #
Pelion is about 320 km north of Athens (roughly 4-5 hours by car). The nearest large city is Volos - take the E75 highway to Volos and follow coastal/secondary roads to mountain villages (Portaria, Makrinitsa) or the eastern beaches (Mylopotamos, Kala Nera). Local buses connect Volos with many Pelion villages in high season.
Tips for Visiting Pelion #
- Explore a single village (Portaria or Makrinitsa) slowly - the best view traps are on narrow lanes above the sea.
- Drive slowly: the roads are mountainous, with hairpins and sudden drop-offs; a small car is recommended.
- Try the local tsipouro or spoon sweets at a kafenio - Pelion's tavern ritual is more interesting than most guidebook attractions.
Best Time to Visit Pelion #
Late spring to early autumn is prime - beaches and trails both accessible; shoulder seasons are quieter for hiking.
