Main image

Peleș Castle is a late 19th-century Neo-Renaissance palace located in Sinaia, Prahova County, Romania, built as a royal summer residence for King Carol I. It is noted for ornate interiors, carved wood and a collection of period art and arms.

Opulent reception rooms, an imperial suite and specialised chambers such as an armory and music room present high-quality decorative arts and craftsmanship from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Terraces and viewpoints link the palace to the nearby Bucegi Mountains and the Sinaia resort town.

Guided tours commonly circulate the principal state rooms and show decorative stonework, stained glass and extensive interior wood carving.

Commissioned by the Romanian royal family in the 1870s, the palace was constructed and decorated through the late 19th century and used as a royal residence until the mid-20th century; it later opened as a museum preserving its interiors and collections.

Set at the edge of the Sinaia mountain resort in Prahova County, the castle sits in the foothills of the Bucegi Mountains and is reachable by road and rail from Bucharest and nearby cities.

  • Construction Period: Construction began in the early 1870s under royal patronage and the main palace complex was completed in the 1880s with later additions up to the early 20th century.
  • Royal Use: The castle served as a royal summer residence until the monarchy ended in 1947 and today operates as a museum with preserved interiors and collections.
