Peel Castle
Castle Medieval castle ruins on St Patrick's Isle
Ruined fortress on St Patrick’s Isle off Peel, Isle of Man, reachable by causeway at low tide; visitors explore Norse- and medieval-era masonry, coastal views and tidal flats.
Peel Castle is a historic ruined stronghold on St Patrick’s Isle, adjacent to the town of Peel on the Isle of Man. It occupies a defensible position on a tidal islet overlooking Peel harbour.
The site combines defensive ruins with ecclesiastical remains, including the ruins of a medieval cathedral and other stonework from multiple periods. Walks around the island and along the causeway provide close-up views of the walls and good vantage points over the harbour and coastline.
A short visit typically covers the main curtain walls, former gatehouse area and the cathedral ruins; interpretation panels on site outline the sequence of occupation. The compact island layout makes the principal features accessible on foot within a short visit.
The site has early medieval origins and was used and modified in the Norse and later medieval periods as an ecclesiastical centre and as a defensive stronghold. Over time it served as a seat of authority for local rulers and saw repeated stone construction and repairs across centuries.
Perched on St Patrick’s Isle just off Peel harbour on the west coast of the Isle of Man, the castle is linked to Peel by a short stone causeway and is immediately adjacent to the town’s waterfront.
- Access: Reached from the centre of Peel via a short causeway and coastal path, making the castle easy to combine with a visit to Peel harbour and town.
