Pedra da Gávea is a prominent granite monolith rising above the southern zone of Rio de Janeiro city; its summit reaches about 844 meters above sea level and it is one of the largest coastal rock faces in the world. The massif lies inside the Tijuca National Park and is a well known landmark for hikers and climbers.

The most frequent draw is the steep, scenic hike to the summit - a roundtrip typically taking several hours depending on route and fitness - culminating in exposed scrambling and panoramic views across the Atlantic coast and the city. Photographers and climbers target the summit plateau for wide vistas toward São Conrado, the Pedra Bonita ridge and the ocean.

Other attractions include rock-climbing lines on the flanks and several viewpoints lower on the massif that offer easier access to views of Rio’s coastline. The rock face and roadside viewpoints make Pedra da Gávea a recognisable feature from many parts of the city.

The peak is a natural granite inselberg that has been part of local landscape knowledge for centuries. In modern times it became popular with mountaineers and hikers; various popular routes were established in the 20th century as urban recreation around Tijuca Forest expanded.

The mountain sits in the southern zone of Rio de Janeiro within Tijuca National Park, close to the neighborhoods of São Conrado and Barra da Tijuca, roughly southwest of central Rio de Janeiro. Trail access is from forested park roads and marked footpaths within the national park.

  • Best viewpoints: The summit sits within Tijuca National Park and offers views over São Conrado beach, Barra da Tijuca and much of Rio de Janeiro.
  • Safety and access: The trail includes exposed scrambling and a vertical final section where fixed iron steps and chains are used, so sturdy footwear and a head for heights are recommended.
