Pazin Castle

Pazin Castle is a medieval fortress overlooking the town of Pazin in Istria County, Croatia. It occupies a prominent position above a karst gorge and is the town’s main historic landmark.

The castle perches above a deep karst sinkhole and the Pazinčica stream, offering close-up views of the rocky gorge and cave mouth. Walks around the battlements give panoramic views over Pazin and the surrounding karst landscape.

Visitors also examine the castle’s exterior fortifications and ruins that dominate the town skyline; short walks from the castle lead directly into the town centre. The site is compact and typically visited as part of a short town tour rather than a long hike.

The site has medieval origins and developed as the principal fortified stronghold for the settlement of Pazin through the medieval period. Over centuries the castle served as a regional administrative and defensive centre for the surrounding Istrian territory.

The castle stands above the centre of Pazin in central Istria, a short walk from the town square and main roads through the region. The landscape around it is typical karst - rocky outcrops, sinkholes and wooded slopes.

• Best views: The karst chasm below the castle is a dramatic geological feature roughly 60 metres deep and is best viewed from the castle walls and the nearby bridge.
