Patriarchate of Peć

The Patriarchate of Peć is a medieval Serbian Orthodox monastery complex composed of several small churches and notable for its fresco cycles and historical role as the seat of the Serbian archbishopric and later patriarchate. The site dates mainly to the 13th and 14th centuries and is a key monument of medieval Serbian culture.

Tightly grouped churches with interior frescoes spanning the 13th to 17th centuries, showing the development of Serbian medieval painting and ecclesiastical architecture. The compact group of chapels and the continuity of Orthodox liturgical use make the complex distinctive.

The complex was established and expanded under Serbian rulers in the medieval period and became the formal seat of the Serbian Patriarchate, playing a central role in the religious life of the medieval Serbian state. Over centuries it saw restorations and additions that reflect changing artistic and political contexts.

The Patriarchate stands near the town of Peć (Peja) in the Kosovo/Metohija region, in a mountainous river valley. It is set against wooded hills a short distance from the modern town centre.

• Church of the Holy Apostles: The Church of the Holy Apostles is the largest building in the complex and contains frescoes dating from the 13th and 14th centuries.
• Church of Saint Demetrius: The Church of Saint Demetrius features medieval fresco cycles and is part of the closely grouped monastic chapels that form the site.
• Church of the Holy Virgin: The Church of the Holy Virgin (Bogorodica) completes the core cluster and contains frescoes and structural elements from the medieval Serbian state period.
