Patagonia National Park is a protected area in Chile’s Aysén Region established to conserve landscapes of the Patagonian steppe, temperate forests and mountain valleys. It is notable for being formed from large tracts of previously privately conserved land donated for national protection.

The park contains a mix of valleys, river corridors and forested slopes used for backcountry hiking, wildlife viewing and conservation science. Infrastructure is concentrated at a limited number of visitor bases and trailheads, with much of the park accessible only by multi-day routes.

The protected area was created through a partnership between conservation organizations and the Chilean government when private reserves were transferred to public management in the late 2010s. The designation aimed to secure contiguous habitat and expand national park coverage in Chilean Patagonia.

Located in southern Chile’s Aysén Region, the park sits within the broader landscape of Chilean Patagonia and is accessed via regional roads and trailheads rather than major urban centers.

  • Conservation origin: The park was created from the donation of privately conserved lands to Chile and is managed to protect Patagonian ecosystems including steppe, forest and freshwater valleys.
  • Visitor character: Most access is by unpaved roads and trails and the area is oriented toward multi-day trekking and remote backcountry visits.
