Auckland’s Pasifika Festival is the largest celebration of Pacific Island cultures outside the islands, organised by local Pacific communities to showcase music, dance, crafts and food. It brings together Samoan, Tongan, Fijian, Cook Islands, Niuean, Tokelauan and many other Pacific communities in a single, lively event.

The festival unfolds as a cluster of national “villages” where each community stages performances, sells traditional food and displays crafts, alongside large main stages for dance competitions and music. The atmosphere is communal and festive: expect colourful costumes, call-and-response singing, rhythmic drumming, fashion displays and busy market lanes at Western Springs Reserve.

Pasifika runs every March and is scheduled as a weekend event so families and community groups can participate; the exact dates change year to year but always fall within March. The programme builds through the weekend with market activity and workshops, peaking on the main performance day when most stage showcases and competitions occur.

Dates are set by the organisers rather than by a lunar or religious calendar, so check the festival website or Auckland Council listings each year for the confirmed weekend and timetable.

Fly into Auckland via Auckland Airport (AKL); from the airport the fastest options are a taxi or rideshare (roughly 20 - 30 minutes depending on traffic) or public transport into the city then a short bus or taxi to Western Springs Reserve. Aim to arrive a day early to settle in, and book accommodation well ahead for the March weekend as rooms fill fast.

• Respect the performers and community spaces: ask before taking close-up photos of people or sacred/cultural items.

• Pack sun protection and a light rain jacket - March in Auckland can be warm but changeable, and much of the festival is outdoors.

• Bring a reusable water bottle and small cash; many food stalls take card but smaller vendors may prefer cash.

• Expect large crowds on the main day (usually Sunday); keep meeting points and phone numbers agreed with your group.
