Parque Nacional Natural Sierra de La Macarena is a protected national park in the Meta Department of Colombia, centered on the Serranía de la Macarena mountain range and internationally known for the colorful river Caño Cristales.

The park contains the river known as Caño Cristales, noted for its seasonal red, yellow and green colors caused by the aquatic plant Macarenia clavigera; the display is most intense during a limited annual window. The park also preserves a mosaic of ecosystems where Amazonian, Andean and Orinoco species overlap, supporting high biodiversity and many endemic plants and animals.

The area was set aside as a national natural park by the Colombian government to protect the Serranía and its unique ecosystems. Over time the park has become a focus for conservation and regulated ecotourism centered on the river and surrounding forests.

The park sits in eastern Colombia within Meta Department, around the town of La Macarena, on an isolated upland between the Amazon and Orinoco basins. La Macarena is the principal gateway settlement for visitors to the park.

  • Best time for colors: The colorful displays in the river are most visible during the wet-to-dry seasonal window, roughly July to November, when the river plants produce red, yellow and green tones.
  • Access point: Access to the park is normally via the town of La Macarena, which serves as the main entry point for guided trips to the river and nearby attractions.
