Parque nacional Cabo Polonio
National Park Remote coastal park with dunes and sea lion colonies
Remote coastal park in Rocha Department with high sand dunes, a lighthouse and large sea lion colonies offshore. Visitors reach the village by authorised transport to see beaches and wildlife.
Parque nacional Cabo Polonio is a coastal protected area in Uruguay’s Rocha Department that conserves a wild dune landscape, small settlement and nearby marine habitats. The site is renowned for its dune fields, isolated village and marine wildlife.
The area is characterised by broad sand dunes, rocky islets and a small, off-grid hamlet clustered near the shore. A historic lighthouse stands on the headland and nearby rocks host large colonies of South American sea lions and numerous seabirds, which attract wildlife viewers.
The park was designated to protect the coastal landscape, dunes and marine life while maintaining the traditional character of the settlement; management emphasises low-impact tourism and conservation of breeding sites. Infrastructure in the village is intentionally limited, with few paved roads and no mains electricity for much of the settlement.
Cabo Polonio lies on Uruguay’s Atlantic coast in Rocha Department and is accessible from the coastal road but not by regular paved road into the village itself. The nearest towns and access points are along the Rocha coast; visitors commonly reach the site by organized shuttle vehicles that cross the dunes.
- Restricted access: Vehicular access is restricted and standard roads do not reach the settlement; visitors typically arrive by authorized dune vehicles across the sand or by foot.
- Sea lion colony: Home to one of Uruguay's largest South American sea lion colonies, visible from observation points near the village and headland.
What to See #
- Cabo Polonio hamlet: The small, remote settlement in the park that has minimal infrastructure and is known for its rustic buildings and tourist accommodations clustered by the dunes.
- Cabo Polonio lighthouse: The coastal headland lighthouse that marks the promontory and is a visible landmark from the village and nearby beaches.
- Sea lion and islet rookeries: Rocky islets and coastal rookeries near the headland that host large colonies of South American sea lions and seabirds.

Cabo Polonio is reached from the park entrance near the village of La Paloma or from Faro José Ignacio depending on the route; most visitors drive to the park’s official entrance and transfer to park-authorized 4x4 vehicles that make the dune crossing to the village (roughly 1 hour).
