Parinacota (volcano)

Parinacota is a high stratovolcano on the border between Chile and Bolivia, forming one half of the twin-cone Payachata group alongside Pomerape. Its steep, symmetrical cone is a prominent feature of the high Andes in the Arica y Parinacota region.

The volcano rises to roughly 6,340 metres above sea level and displays the classic conical profile of stratovolcanic construction. It is typically snow-capped and forms part of a dramatic high-altitude landscape with nearby lakes and plains.

Parinacota and neighboring Pomerape were built by successive volcanic eruptions and lava flows; their paired appearance is a defining local landmark in the central Andes. The massif is a focal point for mountaineering and geological observation in the region.

Geographically, the volcano sits in the Andean altiplano near highland lakes such as Laguna Chungará, on the Chile-Bolivia frontier in northern Chile’s Arica y Parinacota area. The surrounding terrain is high plateau with sparse settlements and protected natural areas.
