Parinacota (volcano)
Volcano Stratovolcano on Chile–Bolivia border with twin peak
A high Andean stratovolcano near the Chile-Bolivia border, Parinacota offers high‑altitude trekking, snow‑capped vistas and access to nearby lagoons where visitors observe Andean wildlife and traditional shepherding.
Parinacota is a high stratovolcano on the border between Chile and Bolivia, forming one half of the twin-cone Payachata group alongside Pomerape. Its steep, symmetrical cone is a prominent feature of the high Andes in the Arica y Parinacota region.
The volcano rises to roughly 6,340 metres above sea level and displays the classic conical profile of stratovolcanic construction. It is typically snow-capped and forms part of a dramatic high-altitude landscape with nearby lakes and plains.
Parinacota and neighboring Pomerape were built by successive volcanic eruptions and lava flows; their paired appearance is a defining local landmark in the central Andes. The massif is a focal point for mountaineering and geological observation in the region.
Geographically, the volcano sits in the Andean altiplano near highland lakes such as Laguna Chungará, on the Chile-Bolivia frontier in northern Chile’s Arica y Parinacota area. The surrounding terrain is high plateau with sparse settlements and protected natural areas.
- Twin volcano: Sits alongside the nearly symmetrical cone of Pomerape as part of the Payachata volcanic complex near Lake Chungará.
- Climbing: Snow-capped at high altitude and frequently climbed by mountaineers acclimatizing for Andean peaks, with high-altitude routes starting from nearby Andean altiplano settlements.
How to Get to Parinacota (volcano) #
Parinacota (the volcano near the Chile-Bolivia border) is in the high Andes and is generally approached by road from the city of Arica (the regional hub) by ascending to Putre and the Lauca National Park area. Road travel is on high‑altitude mountain roads and typically requires a sturdy vehicle; many visitors use guided excursions from Arica or Putre.
Because of altitude, remoteness and border proximity, plan logistics in advance, travel with experienced drivers or guides, and verify road and weather conditions before attempting access.
Tips for Visiting Parinacota (volcano) #
- Approach from the town of Putre on the Chilean side as your base for Lauca National Park-Putre is the common gateway for trips toward Parinacota and allows for overnight acclimatization.
- Plan activities for early morning when mountain views are clearest and winds are lighter; the high-altitude environment can change rapidly, so summit attempts or long treks should start very early.
- Don't attempt independent summit climbs without a certified high-altitude guide and proper acclimatization-local guiding services are familiar with permits, routes, and emergency procedures in this border region.
