Parco Sempione

Parco Sempione is a central public park in Milan located immediately behind the Castello Sforzesco, created in the late 19th century as a major urban green space. It functions as a formal landscaped park with promenades, monuments and cultural venues.

The park was laid out in the period after Milan’s 19th-century urban expansion, replacing older military and agricultural land around the Sforza Castle. Over time it has been adapted for public recreation and to host cultural institutions and monuments.

Parco Sempione sits in central Milan in the Lombardy region, directly northwest of the Duomo area, adjacent to Castello Sforzesco and connected to major tram and metro lines.

• Location in Milan: Lies directly behind the Sforza Castle, forming a central green corridor in Milan that links the castle to the Arco della Pace and the city beyond.

• Arco della Pace (Arch of Peace): A triumphal arch at the northwest end of the park, originally part of a Napoleonic-era road scheme and later rebuilt in the 19th century; it forms a formal axial termination to one park avenue.
• Arena Civica: An open-air arena built in the early 19th century for public events and sporting displays, located within the park and used for concerts and cultural events.
• Torre Branca: A modern steel observation tower designed by Gio Ponti that offers elevated city views from within the park and is a local landmark above the tree canopy.
• Triennale di Milano: A cultural complex and exhibition venue positioned on the park's edge, hosting design and architecture exhibitions and linked to the park's promenades.
