How to Get to Paraty
Paraty is accessed mainly by road: buses from Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo and private transfers are the common ways to arrive. There is no regular passenger rail service to Paraty, so expect a scenic coastal road journey and plan for variable travel times in high season.
Rio de Janeiro-Galeão (GIG): Rio’s main international airport is a common entry point for visitors to Paraty. From Galeão you can reach central Rio (taxi or BRT) and then take a long‑distance bus from Novo Rio bus terminal to Paraty; the bus journey takes roughly 4-5 hours and fares are typically in the range of R$50-R$120 depending on operator and class. Private transfers and shared vans are also widely available and are faster but more expensive.
São Paulo-Guarulhos (GRU) / Santos Dumont (SDU): Paraty is also reachable from São Paulo by long‑distance bus (approximately 4.5-6 hours depending on service and traffic). From Santos Dumont in Rio city centre you can transfer to Novo Rio or other bus terminals for scheduled buses to Paraty. Flight + bus combinations are the most common option to reach Paraty.
Train: There is no regular passenger rail service to Paraty. The coastline historically had rail connections but today travel to Paraty is by road.
Bus: Long‑distance buses run from Rio de Janeiro (Novo Rio) and São Paulo (Tietê/Intermunicipal terminals) to Paraty; journey times are typically around 4-6 hours depending on origin and traffic. Paraty’s historic centre is compact and best navigated on foot; cobbled streets mean comfortable shoes are helpful.
