Today the hills are a mixture of forested slopes, rural settlements and archaeological sites linked to ancient mining and settlement patterns. The landscape supports local agriculture, forestry and small-scale rural communities rather than large urban centres.
The range sits inland from the Aegean coast in northeastern Greece and forms part of the transition between coastal lowlands and higher inland plateaus. It has played a role in regional history due to its resource wealth and strategic position.
