Panathenaic Stadium
Stadium Ancient Greek stadium restored for modern athletic events
Built largely of Pentelic marble, Athens’ Panathenaic Stadium hosted the 1896 modern Olympics; visitors tour the stands, run on the historic track and combine the visit with nearby archaeological sites.
The Panathenaic Stadium in Athens is an ancient Greek stadium rebuilt in marble and located in the citys central district. It is widely recognised as the classical venue reconstructed for modern audiences and sporting ceremonies.
The stadium occupies the site of earlier ancient athletic enclosures and was rebuilt in its marble form during the Roman imperial period and restored in the 19th century for the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. Its long, horseshoe-shaped seating bowl is a distinctive feature and the stadium is used for ceremonial events and public visits.
Throughout history the site has served ancient Panathenaic games and later ceremonial uses; the 19th-century restoration emphasised its role in reviving the Olympic tradition. Today it functions primarily as a historic monument and occasional venue for cultural and sporting ceremonies.
Located within central Athens near the National Gardens and Zappeion, the Panathenaic Stadium is easily reached on foot from major central squares and is a common stop on city sightseeing routes.
- Unique construction and 1896 Olympics: Known in Greek as the Kallimarmaro, it is the only major stadium in the world built entirely of marble and was the venue for the 1896 inaugural modern Olympic Games.
- Modern Olympic role: Serves today as a ceremonial and tourist site in central Athens and was used during the 2004 Olympic Games as the finish for the marathon and for ceremonies.

The Panathenaic Stadium (Kallimarmaro) sits in central Athens next to the National Garden and Zappeion. The closest metro is Syntagma (intersection of Lines 2 and 3); from Syntagma it’s about a 10-15 minute walk downhill through the National Garden/Zappeion area to the stadium. The site is also served by many city buses that stop near Vasileos Konstantinou and Vasilissis Amalias avenues.
Tips for Visiting Panathenaic Stadium #
- Visit the Panathenaic Stadium early in the morning or at dusk to avoid tour buses and get unobstructed photos of the full marble track and stands; light is best for photography just after sunrise or near sunset.
- Approach on foot from Syntagma Square or the National Garden to avoid the busiest tourist clusters on Amalias Avenue; the stadium is an easy walk from Syntagma metro and feels much quieter than surrounding central Athens.
