Palazzo Venezia is a 15th century palace in central Rome, originally built as the Venetian Republic’s embassy in the city and later adapted for papal and state uses. Its bulk and central location make it a prominent urban landmark immediately north of the Capitoline Hill.
The palace houses the Museo Nazionale del Palazzo di Venezia, with collections of sculpture, tapestries and medieval-to-Renaissance artifacts, and includes a large central courtyard and grand ceremonial halls. The external balcony on the piazza is historically associated with 20th century political speeches.
Constructed in the mid-15th century, the building passed through Venetian, papal and Italian state ownership; in the 20th century it gained notoriety as the site from which Mussolini addressed crowds. It has since been conserved as a museum and cultural institution.
