Main image

Palazzo Rosso is a 17th-century palace on Via Garibaldi in Genoa, Italy, converted into a civic art museum showing the collections of a former noble family. It forms part of the Strada Nuova museum complex along with Palazzo Bianco and Palazzo Doria Tursi.

The museum displays paintings, decorative arts and period rooms on the piano nobile, with works spanning Italian and European schools assembled by Genoese collectors. Visitors typically see the main reception rooms and the picture galleries concentrated on one or two floors.

Built as a private palazzo in the 1600s, it later passed into municipal hands and was opened as a public museum to display the family’s art holdings. Its layout preserves aristocratic apartments and formal reception spaces.

Located on Via Garibaldi in the historic centre of Genoa, the palace is in the city’s matrix of narrow streets and grand palazzi and is within walking distance of the harbourfront and other museums.

  • Strada Nuova / UNESCO: Part of the Strada Nuova - Musei di Genova group on Via Garibaldi and included in the Rolli palaces ensemble inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

By car/from the airport: Genova Cristoforo Colombo (GOA) is about 7-10 km from the historic centre - drive via the A10/A7 coastal/ring roads into central Genoa and follow signs for Centro/Strada Nuova.

Tips for Visiting Palazzo Rosso #

  • Aim for the museum opening (early morning) to see the galleries of Palazzo Rosso with minimal crowds; the rooms are compact so mornings feel much quieter than midday.
  • Enter from Via Garibaldi (Strada Nuova) and buy the Musei di Strada Nuova combined ticket if you plan to visit Palazzo Bianco and Palazzo Doria Tursi on the same day - it saves time and money.
  • Set aside extra time for the period rooms and decorative ceilings: many visitors rush past the domestic interiors, but they hold key context for the paintings and Genoese elite life.
