The Palazzo Nuovo is one of the paired 17th- and 18th-century palaces forming the Capitoline Museums on Rome’s Piazza del Campidoglio, dedicated primarily to the display of ancient sculpture. It is a core building of the municipal museum complex on Capitoline Hill.
The piazza and museum complex were reworked from designs by Michelangelo in the 16th century, with the individual palace façades and interiors completed and adapted in later centuries to house public collections. The Palazzo Nuovo was established as a museum space within this ensemble to present the city’s archaeological holdings.
Sited atop the Capitoline Hill overlooking the Roman Forum and the Campidoglio, the palace occupies a central position in Rome’s historic core, adjacent to the Palazzo dei Conservatori and the main municipal buildings.
