Palazzo della Ragione

Palazzo della Ragione in Padua is a large medieval town hall and civic palace in the city’s historic centre, noted for its monumental upper hall. The building dates principally to the early 13th century and has served administrative and market functions for centuries.

The defining interior is the Salone, a single large hall on the upper floor measuring roughly 81 by 27 meters that originally hosted civic assemblies and later displays extensive fresco decoration. At ground level the palace straddles the market arcade area and connects the two historic market squares, remaining an active urban space.

Constructed in the early 13th century as the town’s civic hall, the palace was altered and redecorated over subsequent centuries including the addition of the fresco program that covers its interior surfaces. Its continuous civic and commercial use has left the building largely intact as a public monument.

The palace occupies a central position in Padua between Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza della Frutta, within the city’s medieval core and within walking distance of the cathedral and other historic landmarks.
