Palazzo della Cancelleria

The Palazzo della Cancelleria is a Renaissance palace in central Rome that dates from the late 15th and early 16th centuries. It has served historically as the seat of the Papal Chancery and remains associated with Vatican administration.

The complex is notable for its travertine facade and a large rectangular Renaissance courtyard framed by arcades. Interior access is restricted because the building contains offices, but the courtyard and selected rooms are open during guided tours and occasional public events.

Construction was commissioned by Cardinal Raffaele Riario beginning in 1489 and completed in the early 16th century. Over time the palace became the seat of the Papal Chancery and underwent conservation work to preserve its Renaissance fabric.

The palazzo sits in Rome’s historic centre in the rione Regola, near Campo de’ Fiori and Piazza delle Cinque Lune, a short walk from other central landmarks.
