Palazzo del Capitaniato

Palazzo del Capitaniato is a historical government palace on Piazza dei Signori in Vicenza, Veneto, designed in the 16th century by architect Andrea Palladio. It stands directly beside the Basilica Palladiana and is a prominent example of Palladian civic architecture.

The building’s exterior is notable for its ornate facade and loggia that address the main square; its rooms historically served civic and administrative functions linked to the Venetian state. The palace is visually integrated with the surrounding Renaissance civic buildings and is frequently viewed from the open space of the piazza.

Constructed in the 16th century under Palladio’s design, the palace served as the seat or residence of the Venetian captain or local representative of the Venetian Republic and formed part of Vicenza’s civic center. It has been preserved as part of the city’s architectural heritage and is included in the ensemble of Palladian buildings that contribute to Vicenza’s UNESCO recognition.
