Palazzo Balbi, Venice

Palazzo Balbi is a historic palazzo on Venice’s Grand Canal in the Veneto region of Italy, built for the Balbi family in the late Renaissance period. It currently houses institutional offices for the regional government of Veneto.

The palazzo’s façade faces the Grand Canal and is commonly appreciated from passing vaporetti and canal-front walkways; ornate windows and a grandeur typical of Venetian palaces mark its riverfront elevation. Public access is generally limited because the building serves administrative functions, so the principal experience is external appreciation and photography.

Constructed for the Balbi family during the late Renaissance/early Baroque era, the palazzo has seen successive ownership and interior alterations while retaining its canal-front prominence. In modern times it has been used for regional administrative purposes.

Set directly on the Grand Canal in Venice, the palazzo sits near the Accademia area and is readily visible from common vaporetto routes and nearby footbridges.
