Palazzo Abatellis

Palazzo Abatellis is a 15th-century Gothic palace in Palermo that now serves as the Galleria Regionale della Sicilia, the regional art gallery of Sicily. The palace is notable both for its architecture and for a collection of medieval, Renaissance and later Sicilian art.

Galleries present paintings, sculpture and decorative arts from across Sicily, with particular highlights in medieval and early Renaissance works and one of the island’s best-known late medieval frescoes, the “Triumph of Death.” The museum layout follows the palace rooms, presenting works in historic interiors.

Constructed in the 15th century as a noble residence, the palace later became a public museum to display the region’s collections; it has been adapted and conserved to accommodate the gallery and its exhibitions. The building and collection have been reshaped over time to serve cultural and museum functions.

The palazzo stands in central Palermo, Sicily, within the city’s historic core and is a short walk from other major landmarks and the cathedral.
