Palacio Barolo
Building Early 20th-century Buenos Aires skyscraper inspired by Dante
On Avenida de Mayo in Buenos Aires, Palacio Barolo draws architecture buffs for its Dante-inspired design, early 20th-century ornament and a rooftop lighthouse offering city views on guided tours.
Palacio Barolo is an office building on Buenos Aires’ Avenida de Mayo, designed by Italian architect Mario Palanti and completed in 1923. The building’s design is famously inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy and was one of the tallest structures in the city when opened.
The structure’s vertical composition and top lantern - a rooftop lighthouse - were intended as symbolic elements and give the building a distinctive profile on Avenida de Mayo. Visitors commonly join guided tours to reach upper levels and the lighthouse for city views.
Built between 1919 and 1923 for the businessman Luis Barolo, the building originally housed offices and commercial space and was conceived as a modern skyscraper in early 20th-century Buenos Aires. Its twin conceptual project by Palanti in Montevideo is the Palacio Salvo.
Located on Avenida de Mayo in central Buenos Aires, the building faces the Plaza de Mayo axis and is within walking distance of the Casa Rosada and other civic landmarks. It is in the downtown Montserrat / Microcentro area.

- Enter from Avenida de Mayo and arrive for an early-morning tour to see unobstructed views toward Plaza de Mayo and the Congress before midday crowds and bus groups arrive.
