Palace on the Isle
Palace 18th-century waterside palace in Łazienki Park
Set on an artificial island in Łazienki Park, Warsaw’s Palace on the Isle offers Baroque-classical interiors, period furniture and lakeside walks; visitors pair palace tours with concerts in the park and strolls past peacocks and sculptures.
The Palace on the Isle (Pałac na Wyspie) is a neoclassical palace set on an artificial island in Łazienki Park in Warsaw, originally a 17th-century bathing pavilion remodelled in the late 18th century. It served as a summer residence and royal salon for Poland’s last king, Stanisław II Augustus, and is a central attraction within the park.
Visitors encounter restored royal apartments, period interiors and decorative schemes that reflect late 18th-century tastes and court life. The palace is closely integrated with the surrounding landscaped gardens, ponds and public pathways of Łazienki Park.
The present appearance dates mainly from the late 1700s when the palace was converted and enlarged under royal patronage; it suffered damage during World War II and was subsequently restored in the postwar period. The building is now part of Poland’s national museum network.
Situated in the heart of Warsaw’s Łazienki Park, the palace occupies an island on a park lake and is surrounded by lawns, tree-lined promenades and other historic park buildings.
- Architectural note: The palace was remodelled in the late 18th century by architect Domenico Merlini for King Stanisław II Augustus and is a leading example of Polish neoclassical architecture.
- Park setting: Located inside Łazienki Park, the site is commonly visited together with the park's gardens, sculptures and other palaces and is a popular city green space.
