Palace of Zarzuela

The Palace of Zarzuela is the principal official residence of the Spanish royal family, located to the northwest of central Madrid within the Community of Madrid. The complex serves as both a private residence and the administrative workplace of the monarch rather than a public museum.

The site comprises the main palace building and surrounding grounds set within a wooded area that has historically been used as royal hunting grounds. The palace complex has been adapted for modern residential and administrative use while retaining its role as the principal domicile of the reigning monarch.

Originally built in earlier centuries as a hunting lodge and estate, the palace developed into the modern royal residence through additions and renovations; it became the preferred residence for the royal family in the 20th century. Its use has been primarily domestic and administrative rather than ceremonial, and it is not generally open to routine public visitation.

The palace sits on the western edge of Madrid, around 10 to 15 kilometres from central Madrid, adjacent to managed woodland and estate lands that separate it from the urban area.
