Palace of the Kings of Majorca
Castle Gothic palace in Perpignan, former Majorcan royal residence
Perpignan’s 13th‑century Palace of the Kings of Majorca dominates the old town with Gothic halls and rooftop views. Visitors come for medieval architecture, Catalan court history and easy access to narrow streets, museums and regional Catalan cuisine.
The Palace of the Kings of Majorca is a late 13th- to early 14th-century Gothic royal palace in the centre of Perpignan, created as the residence and administrative seat of the Kingdom of Majorca. It is one of the main medieval monuments in the Roussillon region.
The palace is a fortified complex combining large ceremonial rooms, a royal chapel and extensive external ramparts and courtyards organized on a compact, fortress-like plan. The ensemble presents typical medieval royal functions in a fortified setting and includes terraces and towers that provide extensive views over the city and surrounding plain.
Constructed for the Majorcan royal household in the late 1200s and early 1300s, the palace served as a dynastic seat during the kingdom’s rule of the region. After the decline of the kingdom, the building passed through various owners and uses and has been conserved and presented as a historic monument since the 19th and 20th centuries.
The palace sits in the historic core of Perpignan in southern France, close to the Spanish border and within the city’s medieval district. It occupies a prominent position above the urban fabric and is easily reached from Perpignan’s central streets.
- Date and origin: The building dates from the late 13th and early 14th centuries and served as the seat and residence of the kings of Majorca during that period.
- Viewpoints: Upper terraces and towers offer panoramic views across Perpignan toward the Pyrenees and, on clear days, the Mediterranean coast.
