Archaeological Site Mycenaean palace ruins near Pylos, Bronze Age site
The Mycenaean Palace of Nestor near Pylos, with excavated rooms, storage magazines and Linear B finds; archaeologically inclined visitors come for Bronze Age remains and nearby Navarino coast scenery.
The Palace of Nestor is a Mycenaean Bronze Age palace complex near the modern village of Chora, close to Pylos in the Peloponnese. It is one of the best-preserved palatial sites from the Late Bronze Age in Greece.
Open ruins show the plan of the complex with a central megaron and surrounding rooms, and visitors can see surviving foundations and fragments of frescoes and stonework. Finds from the site include administrative clay tablets and material culture that illuminate Mycenaean palace economy.
The palace was built and used by Mycenaean elites in the Late Bronze Age as an administrative and political centre of the region. The site was later abandoned during the end of the Bronze Age and rediscovered and excavated by archaeologists in the 20th century.
The ruins lie inland from the Bay of Navarino near Chora, a short drive from the town of Pylos on the western coast of the Peloponnese.
- Linear B tablets: Archaeological excavations uncovered Linear B tablets at the site, providing written records of palace administration from the Late Bronze Age.
