Palace of Mafra

The Palace of Mafra is an expansive 18th-century Baroque palace-monastery complex in Mafra, Portugal, commissioned by King João V. It combines a royal palace, a Franciscan monastery and a monumental basilica.

Construction began in 1717 following a royal vow and continued through the mid-18th century as a major royal building project funded by colonial wealth. The complex served both as a royal residence and as a functioning monastery and has been preserved as a historic monument since.

The palace stands in the town of Mafra, northwest of Lisbon, and is accessible by road from the Lisbon metropolitan area.
