The Palace of Fontainebleau is a royal château located in Fontainebleau, Île-de-France, southwest of Paris. Its origins date to the medieval period and it functioned as a principal residence of French monarchs for many centuries.
The complex contains multiple state apartments, richly decorated galleries and a compact royal chapel, with interiors spanning Renaissance to 19th-century Imperial styles. The grounds include formal gardens and an extensive park that link to the surrounding Forest of Fontainebleau.
A medieval hunting lodge grew into a royal palace through major expansions from the 16th century under Francis I and later work by Bourbon and Napoleonic rulers; successive monarchs refitted apartments and galleries. The palace remained a center of court life and later became a museum and national monument with restorations in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Sited in the town of Fontainebleau about 55 km southeast of central Paris, the palace sits at the edge of the Forest of Fontainebleau and is accessible by rail and road from the Paris region.
