Padua Cathedral
Church Cathedral in Padua featuring Romanesque and Gothic elements
Padua’s cathedral complex combines Romanesque and later elements and includes an ornate baptistery with frescoes. Visitors pair the Duomo with the Scrovegni Chapel and explore the nearby university quarter and Venetian‑era streets.
Padua Cathedral (Duomo di Padova) is the Roman Catholic cathedral of Padua and the episcopal seat of the Diocese of Padua, with medieval origins and later rebuildings that shaped its present appearance. The complex is centered on the Piazza del Duomo in Padua’s historic core.
The cathedral interior combines elements from several periods and contains religious art and altarpieces associated with the city’s ecclesiastical history. Adjacent to the cathedral, the Baptistery is a principal attraction for its extensive 14th-century fresco program by Giusto de’ Menabuoi.
A Christian church has occupied the site since the early medieval period; the present cathedral reflects major reconstructions from the later Middle Ages into the modern era. The Baptistery dates from the 14th century and preserves one of the best-known cycles of medieval fresco painting in the region.
The cathedral complex stands on Piazza del Duomo in central Padua, Veneto, immediately north of the city’s main historic streets and within walking distance of the Scrovegni Chapel and other central monuments.
