Pachacamac
Archaeological Site Pre-Columbian archaeological complex and pilgrimage center
South of Lima, Pachacamac is a pre-Columbian pilgrimage complex with pyramids, plazas and temples; visitors take day trips to the archaeological museum and guided walks across the coastal site.
Pachacamac is a pre-Columbian archaeological complex located on the Lurín Valley about 40 km southeast of central Lima. It served as a major pilgrimage and ritual center in the Central Coast region before the Spanish conquest.
The site contains multiple adobe pyramids, plazas and temple complexes built by successive cultures; visitors commonly view large platform mounds, courtyard groups and the remains of ceremonial buildings. The on-site Museo de Sitio exhibits ceramics, textiles and offerings recovered at the site and helps orient visitors to the layout.
Pachacamac developed as a religious center long before the arrival of the Inca and was later incorporated into the Inca state in the 15th century. Archaeological layers and monument styles reflect use by the Lima culture, Wari, Ichma and Inca across many centuries; Spanish chroniclers recorded the site’s religious importance at contact.
The complex sits in the dry coastal valley of the Lurín River, along the Panamericana Sur highway, roughly 40 km southeast of Lima in the Department of Lima. The modern town of Pachacamac lies adjacent to the archaeological zone and provides basic visitor services.
- Getting there: Accessible by road from Lima along the Panamericana Sur; guided tours are common and local museums in Lima often include exhibits from Pachacamac.
- Conservation note: Much of the visible architecture is adobe and vulnerable to weathering, so some sections are cordoned off to protect fragile structures.
What to See #
- Site complex: A complex of adobe pyramids, plazas and temples dating to pre-Columbian cultures, with a small on-site museum that displays ceramics, textiles and funerary offerings recovered from the site.
- Temple of the Sun: A large sun-facing temple often called the Temple of the Sun, notable for its remaining adobe platforms and ritual spaces used by successive cultures.
- Site Museum: A museum on site that houses artifacts excavated from the ruins and provides interpretation of the site's cult of Pacha Kamaq and later Inca activity.
How to Get to Pachacamac #
Pachacamac is on the southern outskirts of Lima in the district of Lurín, reached by driving southeast on the Panamericana Sur (Route 1S). The drive from central Lima/Miraflores is typically about 30-45 minutes (roughly 30-40 km) depending on traffic; follow Panamericana Sur and exit toward Lurín/Pachacamac and then follow local signs to the archaeological complex. There are frequent intercity buses and colectivos from Lima that travel the Panamericana Sur and stop in Lurín - alight at the Pachacamac turnoff and it’s a short walk from the road to the site entrance.
Tips for Visiting Pachacamac #
- Arrive at Pachacamac right at opening (typically morning) to avoid heat and tour-bus crowds and to have the plazas and pyramids more peacefully to yourself.
- Start your visit inside the on-site Museo de Sitio to get the archaeological context and maps before exploring the pyramid platforms and sacred plazas-the museum is often skipped by drive-by tour groups.
- Use the main visitor entrance off the Panamericana Sur and plan for a taxi or organized transport from Miraflores/Lima rather than trying to rely on infrequent local buses; that makes timing your visit and returning before the busiest late-afternoon period much easier.
