Museum Large German aquarium museum on the Baltic coast
A major public aquarium in Stralsund focused on the Baltic Sea and North Sea ecosystems; visitors see large tanks, seal exhibits and displays on regional marine research.
The Ozeaneum is a public aquarium and museum on the Baltic coast in the Hanseatic city of Stralsund, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It is part of the regional oceanographic museum network and opened as a major visitor aquarium in the 21st century.
Exhibits focus on the ecosystems of the Baltic Sea and the North Sea, with multiple large aquaria, species displays and interpretive exhibits about marine habitats. The site also includes a seal enclosure and hands-on displays aimed at family visitors.
The institution was established as an extension of the region’s oceanographic museum activities to provide large-scale living displays and education about local seas. Since opening it has concentrated on modern exhibit design and live-animal husbandry.
The Ozeaneum sits on Stralsund’s harbourfront close to the city’s old town and port facilities on the German Baltic coast, within easy walking distance of the town’s medieval centre.
- Waterfront location: Located adjacent to Stralsund's historic harbour and the UNESCO-listed old town, making it easy to combine with a visit to the city's medieval centre.
What to See #
- Regional sea tanks: Displays concentrating on the Baltic Sea and the North Sea with large public aquaria that show regional fish, invertebrates and seabed habitats.
- Seal habitat and exhibits: A seal enclosure and related exhibits that present pinniped behaviour and rehabilitation information, located on the harbour side of the building.
