Oviedo Cathedral

Oviedo Cathedral, formally the Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica of the Holy Saviour, is the principal cathedral in Oviedo, Asturias, northern Spain. It is chiefly a Gothic building that contains an older royal chapel, the Cámara Santa.

Within the complex are the Gothic nave, cloister and the Cámara Santa chapel, which houses medieval reliquaries and liturgical objects of regional importance. The cathedral interior features sculpted stonework, stained glass and chapels open to visitors and pilgrims.

The current Gothic cathedral was built mainly from the 14th century on the site of an earlier pre-Romanesque church. The Cámara Santa predates the Gothic structure and was established as a royal chapel in the early medieval period, becoming a repository for important Christian relics.

The cathedral stands in the historic centre of Oviedo in Asturias, in northern Spain, and is a focal point for the city’s religious and cultural heritage.
