Ovčar

Ovčar is a mountain ridge and part of the Ovčar-Kablar area in central Serbia, associated with the West Morava river gorge. The locality is noted for a cluster of Orthodox monasteries set on the slopes and in small side valleys.

The area offers steep river gorge scenery, short hiking routes and roadside viewpoints, together with visits to several monastery churches that retain medieval and post-medieval architecture. Routes through the gorge link the main monastic sites and river viewpoints.

Monastic foundations in the Ovčar area date from the medieval era through the post-medieval centuries and were established as religious and cultural centres along this stretch of the West Morava. Many monasteries were rebuilt or repaired over time but retain historic church buildings and monastic ensembles.

Ovčar lies in central/western Serbia near the town of Čačak, occupying the slopes above the West Morava river within a deeply incised gorge landscape.
