Ouvéa Island

Ouvéa (Uvea) is a coral atoll in the Loyalty Islands Province of New Caledonia, administratively part of France, known for its wide lagoon, long white-sand beaches and Kanak communities. The island is one of the Loyalty Islands’ principal inhabited atolls.

The island offers lagoon-based activities such as snorkeling, diving and fishing along its fringing reef, and long coastal beaches that are among its most visited features. Traditional villages, local craft and customary cultural life remain important on the island and are part of visitor experiences.

Ouvéa has been inhabited by Polynesian/Melanesian peoples for centuries and came under French colonial administration along with the rest of New Caledonia; it is now governed as part of the Loyalty Islands Province within the French Republic.

Geographically Ouvéa lies northeast of New Caledonia’s Grande Terre and is reached by domestic flights to its airstrip and by infrequent ferry links; local transport and simple tourist facilities are concentrated in the main villages.
