Ötztal Alps
Mountains Alpine mountain range spanning Austria and Italian borders
High alpine terrain in Tyrol, the Ötztal Alps draw hikers, skiers and climbers to glaciers, steep ridges and resorts such as Sölden and Obergurgl, with long summer trails and winter ski infrastructure.
The Ötztal Alps are a mountain range in the Central Eastern Alps, primarily in the Austrian state of Tyrol, notable for high peaks and extensive glaciers. The range includes Wildspitze, which at 3,768 metres is the highest summit in the group and a focal point for climbers.
The area offers a mix of alpine activities: glacier and high-mountain climbing, multi-day trekking, and winter skiing on both valley resorts and glacier slopes. Glaciated terrain and high passes also attract scientific interest and hikers tracing alpine routes; the range contains numerous huts and marked trails used by mountaineers and trekkers.
Glacial processes shaped the range over the last ice ages, and the Ötztal Alps have a long history of human use as high alpine pasture and travel corridors. In 1991 a remarkably well-preserved Copper Age human known as the “Iceman” was recovered from a glacier in the Ötztal region, a find that linked the range to deep archaeological significance.
Geographically the Ötztal Alps lie in western Austria’s Tyrol region, along the border area with northern Italy. The mountain valleys feed into broader Tyrolean valley systems and the range is accessible from several Tyrolean towns and alpine passes.
- Best seasons: Alpine activities are concentrated on glaciers and high peaks; the mountaineering season for high summits typically runs from late spring to early autumn, while ski areas operate in winter and on glacier slopes.
- Altitude note: The range's highest summit reaches 3,768 metres, so weather and route conditions change rapidly and high-altitude experience is required for major climbs.
What to See #
- Wildspitze: Austria's second-highest peak at 3,768 metres, a primary objective for mountaineers and ski-tourers in the range.
- Hauslabjoch / Similaun area: The area around the Hauslabjoch and the Similaun/Findel glacier, where the 1991 discovery of the Copper Age "Iceman" took place, remains of archaeological and mountaineering interest.
