Ostrog monastery
Religious Site Orthodox cliffside monastery and important pilgrimage site
Perched into a cliff near Ostroška Greda, Ostrog Monastery attracts Orthodox pilgrims and curious visitors for its frescoed chapels, mountain views and the experience of a centuries-old pilgrimage route.
Ostrog Monastery is a Serbian Orthodox monastery founded in the 17th century and built into a vertical cliff of Ostroška Greda in central Montenegro. It is known for housing the relics of Metropolitan Bishop Vasilije (St. Basil of Ostrog) and is a major pilgrimage destination.
The complex comprises an Upper Monastery set high in the rock face and a Lower Monastery below; the Upper Monastery contains chapels and the saint’s tomb and is reached by a steep path or road. Visitors come for devotional pilgrimage, to venerate relics and to see the dramatic monastic architecture integrated into the cliff.
The monastery dates to the mid-1600s and grew around the hermitage and burial place of Bishop Vasilije, who died in 1671; it has been expanded and maintained by monastic communities since then and remains active as a religious site.
Ostrog is located on the slopes of Ostroška Greda in Nikšić Municipality, positioned high above the surrounding valley and accessed by a winding road from nearby towns in central Montenegro.
- Access note: Pilgrims often arrive on foot or by bus along a steep access road; the Upper Monastery requires climbing steps and narrow passages carved into the rock.
- Relics: The relics of St. Basil (Vasilije of Ostrog) are enshrined at the monastery and are the focal point of Orthodox pilgrimage, especially on major feast days.
