Ospedale L'Albergo Reale dei Poveri, Naples

Ospedale L’Albergo Reale dei Poveri, commonly known as the Albergo dei Poveri, is a large 18th-century institutional complex in Naples, Campania, originally established as a royal hospice for the poor. It occupies an extended rectangular footprint and was one of the Bourbon monarchy’s major social-building projects.

The building comprises long wings arranged around internal courtyards, with a monumental street-facing façade and service spaces organized for large-scale accommodation and training. Over time its uses have changed, including administrative and military uses, and parts of the complex have undergone restoration and adaptive reuse for cultural and social functions.

The project dates to the mid-1700s, commissioned as a state-run charitable institution; its scale and urban presence reflect 18th-century ambitions for public welfare architecture in Naples.

The complex sits within the city of Naples near Via Foria and the historic centre, easily reached from central Naples by road and public transport.
