Ospedale della Pietà

The Ospedale della Pietà in Venice was a charitable institution and music school that operated as a foundling hospital and conservatory for abandoned or orphaned girls. It gained wide renown in the 17th and 18th centuries for its musical training and ensemble performances.

The institution provided shelter, education and vocational training, with an especially prominent musical programme; musicians from the Ospedale gave regular public concerts that attracted visitors and patrons. Antonio Vivaldi was employed there in the early 18th century and composed works for its ensembles, which helped to establish the Pietà’s reputation across Europe.

The Ospedale functioned as both a social welfare institution and a centre of music education in Venice from the early modern period through the 18th century, influencing the city’s musical life and charitable practices. It is located in the historic centre of Venice and its buildings and church remain part of the city’s cultural heritage.
