Osogovska Planina
Mountains Balkan mountain range straddling Bulgaria and North Macedonia.
Straddling the Bulgaria-North Macedonia frontier, Osogovska Planina is a mountain massif of forests, alpine meadows and peaks. Hikers and nature-minded visitors explore trails, small villages and seasonal mountain pastures.
Osogovska Planina is a mountain range on the border between southwestern Bulgaria and northeastern North Macedonia notable for rounded peaks and mixed forest cover. The range features alpine meadows, summer pastures and a number of hiking trails used by local and regional visitors.
The highest summit, Ruen, sits on the international boundary and reaches approximately 2,251 metres, offering routes of varying difficulty to the summit. Lower slopes contain coniferous and mixed forests and traditional mountain villages with pastoral activities.
Historically the mountains have supported forestry and local agriculture; in recent decades recreational hiking and seasonal tourism have grown. Several marked trails and mountain lodges provide access points for ascents and day trips.
Geographically the range lies inland from the Bulgarian capital Sofia at a distance of a few hundred kilometres; the nearest regional towns provide trailheads for access to the mountains.

Osogovska Planina is best visited in summer (June-September) for hiking access and milder conditions; winters are cold with snow at higher elevations.
