Oscar Niemeyer International Cultural Centre
Museum Cultural complex in Avilés designed by Oscar Niemeyer
The Oscar Niemeyer International Cultural Centre in Avilés, Asturias, is a modernist complex of exhibition halls and performance spaces by the Brazilian architect. Visitors come for its architecture, exhibitions and cultural programming.
The Oscar Niemeyer International Cultural Centre, commonly called Centro Niemeyer, is a contemporary arts complex on the waterfront of Avilés in Asturias, northern Spain, designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer and opened in 2011. The site functions as a cultural hub for performances, exhibitions and public events.
The complex is composed of a set of white-painted concrete structures, a large plaza and a reflective water surface; principal uses include an auditorium, exhibition halls and spaces for conferences and film. The centre programmes concerts, exhibitions and festivals and is frequently visited by locals and regional cultural audiences.
The project was commissioned to provide a contemporary cultural facility for Avilés and was completed in the early 2010s as part of waterfront regeneration efforts. Niemeyer’s designs emphasise curved forms, open plazas and sculptural volumes in keeping with his wider architectural language.
The centre sits on the estuary of the Ría de Avilés in the town of Avilés on Spain’s northern coast, within Asturias and accessible from the regional road network and nearby cities in the region.
