Orval Abbey
Religious Site Cistercian abbey ruins and brewery producing Trappist beer
In Wallonia, Orval Abbey pairs Cistercian monastic ruins with a working brewery; travelers visit the cloisters and abbey church, take guided tours and buy the namesake Trappist beer at the abbey shop.
Orval Abbey is a Cistercian monastery and ruin complex in Wallonia, southern Belgium, founded in the early 12th century and known both for its historic abbey ruins and for the Trappist-style Orval ale brewed on site. The site combines religious, historic and commercial elements.
Visitors can walk among restored cloister ruins, see the abbey church and modern monastic buildings, visit an on-site museum and buy Orval beer and local products at the visitor shop. The landscaped grounds and architectural remains form a clear presentation of the site’s medieval origins and 20th-century revival.
Founded in the 12th century as a Cistercian monastery, the abbey was destroyed and abandoned in earlier centuries and was re-established by a new monastic community in the 20th century. The commercial brewery connected with the abbey began production in the early 20th century and the beer became internationally known as Orval.
The abbey lies near the village of Villers-devant-Orval in the province of Luxembourg in Wallonia, close to the French border and reachable from regional towns such as Florenville.
- Access and brewery: the modern monastic community and the commercial brewery operate on adjacent parts of the site; the abbey welcomes visitors to the ruins, church and museum area but some monastic areas are closed to the public.
What to See #
- Abbey ruins and monastic buildings: the restored abbey ruins and cloister date from the medieval Cistercian foundation and are presented alongside modern monastic buildings used by the current community.
- Brewery and shop: the brewery and visitor shop on the site produce and sell the Trappist-style Orval ale associated with the abbey grounds.
How to Get to Orval Abbey #
Orval is about 130 km southeast of Brussels and 40 km from Namur. The nearest major town is Virton; regional buses and taxis connect to the abbey. Driving is the simplest option; the abbey has visitor parking and wayfinding from nearby roads.
Tips for Visiting Orval Abbey #
- Check the Abbey's guided-tour schedule; parts of the ruins are fragile and only accessible with a guide.
- Arrive in late afternoon for the light on the ruins - Orval's roofless cloisters have remarkable shadows at that hour.
- Combine the monastery visit with a tasting of Orval beer at local bars rather than expecting tours of the brewery - the brewing site and monastic cloisters are separate experiences.
Best Time to Visit Orval Abbey #
Late spring through early autumn is most pleasant for walking the grounds and visiting the ruins; avoid Belgian rainy spells where possible.
